Romero's Heroics Give BKLYN Sweep

CONEY ISLAND, NY (August 18, 2019) –  Yoel Romero was the hero on a Sunday night in Brooklyn, mashing a walk-off, two-run home run to give the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Short-Season Class A affiliate of the New York Mets, a doubleheader sweep of the Tri-City ValleyCats with 2-1 and 5-3 victories at MCU Park.

  • Jose Peroza and Raul Beracierta drew back-to-back, bases-loaded walks in the seventh to give the Cyclones a 2-1 lead.
  • Matt Mullenbach slammed the door with two scoreless innings to close the game, stranding the potential tying run at second in the ninth.
  • Both starting pitchers, Brooklyn’s Garrison Bryant and Tri-City’s Juan Pablo Lopez, tossed five scoreless innings on Saturday night before the first game of the series was paused and, after a 48-minute delay, suspended until Sunday due to fog.

  • Leading off the bottom of the eighth, Yoel Romero crushed a two-run, walk-off home run to left field to give Brooklyn a 5-3 win and complete the twinbill sweep of Tri-City.
  • Nelson Leon set up the Cyclones’ heroics with a scoreless top of the eighth inning, picking up the final out by tagging Tri-City’s Korey Lee at home as he attempted to score on a wild pitch.
  • Tri-City knotted the game at 3-3 in the sixth on an RBI groundout from Luis Guerrero and a game-tying wild pitch.
  • Gavin Garay helped Brooklyn strike first in the second, booming an RBI double off the left-field wall to score Jake Mangum. Later in the inning, Garay made it 2-0 by scoring on a throwing error.

  • Yoel Romero’s walk-off home run was the Cyclones’ first in almost two full seasons. Brooklyn’s last game-ending tater came on August 31, 2017, when Walter Rasquin blasted a solo home run to give Brooklyn a 3-2 win over Lowell in eight innings and complete a doubleheader sweep.
  • ·        Brooklyn celebrated its fourth walk-off win of the season, three of which have come in the last two weeks. Brooklyn is also now 6-3 in extra innings.

  •          The Cyclones once again own sole possession of first place in the Wild Card, a half-game above Staten Island and Aberdeen and one game over Batavia.
