LOSING SKID HITS THREE AS BKLYN FALLS, 9-6

LOWELL, MA – August 21, 2016 – The Cyclones dropped their third straight on Sunday evening, falling to the Spinners by the score of 9-6. Gabriel Llanes (4-6) was tagged with the loss after allowing nine runs, five earned, on seven hits over 4.0 innings on the mound. The righthander also tied the franchise record, allowing three home runs in the start.

Brooklyn got on the board early, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first. Desmond Lindsay and Colby Woodmansee worked back-to-back works with two outs and Ali Sanchez reached on a fielding error to load the bases. Blake Tiberi followed with a two-RBI single to open the scoring as the Cyclones jumped ahead 2-0.

The lead would be short lived however, three batters to be exact, as the Lowell Spinners came out swinging in the bottom of the frame. Matt McLean and Victor Acosta singled to start the frame and both came around to score on a Tyler Hill double that knotted the score at 2-2. One batter later, the Spinners left fielder came around to score on an error by Michael Paez to give Lowell a 3-2 advantage.

Their lead would swell in the bottom of the second courtesy of a pair of long balls – a solo shot from Tucker Tubbs and a two-run blast off the bat of Tyler Hill that made it 6-2.

Brooklyn trimmed into the deficit in the top of the third, again thanks to a two-out rally. Tiberi walked and Brandon Brosher singled before Darryl Knight had a two-RBI double and Hengelbert Rojas added an run scoring double of his own that got Brooklyn within a run at 6-5.

But the see-saw scoring continued in the bottom of the frame and Lowell grabbed the momentum once again, as Tucker Tubbs connected on a two-run shot, his second home run of the evening to extend Lowell’s lead to 8-5. The Spinners tacked on another run in the fourth courtesy of a two-out RBI single from Ryan Scott that made it 9-5 and put an end to Gabriel Llanes’s night on the mound.

While Brooklyn was able to mount offense off of Lowell’s starter Darwinzon Hernandez, the Cyclones bats were stymied by the Spinners bullpen. Pat Goetze (3-1) tossed 3.1 shutout frames before handing the ball over to Dioscar Romero who closed out the game for his fourth save of the season. Brooklyn managed to push a run across in the top of the ninth on a Blake Tiberi RBI groundout that made the final score 9-6.

Brooklyn will look to salvage the series finale and the final game of their six-game road trip on Monday evening when they send RHP Merandy Gonzalez to the mound.  The ‘Clones will return to Coney Island on Tuesday for a three-game set with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Super Hero Night at the ballpark. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a Lucas “Duda Smash” Bobblehead and Midtown Comics will also be distributing free comic books for fans in attendance. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at 718-507-TIXX, in person at the MCU Park Box Office or at BrooklynCyclones.com.
