BROOKLYN BLANKS 'GADES, 3-0

FISHKILL, NY – August 3, 2016 – The Cyclones offense continued their struggles on Wednesday night, collecting just four hits, but one of them was a big fly off the bat of Pete Alonso that provided all the offense Brooklyn would need en route to a 3-0 victory over the Hudson Valley Renegades. With the victory the Cyclones moved just 2.5 games out of first place.

The Cyclones got the leadoff batter aboard in both the first and second innings, each time getting him to third base, but Brooklyn was unable to get a hit in the critical spot…that is, until the top of the third. Gene Cone started the frame with a single and moved into scoring position when Colby Woodmansee worked a one-out walk. That set the stage for Pete Alonso, who connected on 2-0 offering and sent it deep over the left field wall, his fourth home run of the season, to give Brooklyn a 3-0 lead.

After Hudson Valley starter Eduardo Rosillo walked the next two batters he faced, the righthander was chased from the game. Rosillo walked five batters and threw three wild pitches before handing the ball over to Jayson McKinley. McKinley tossed 4.1 innings of near-perfect relief allowing just one hit.

But with Brooklyn starter Harol Gonzalez (4-1) on the mound, the early offense from the Cyclones would be more than enough. The righthander tossed 7.0 shutout frames, scattering just four hits and a walk while striking out four. Gonzalez was aided by some stellar defense behind him as Alonso, CF Jacob Zanon and LF Jay Jabs all made diving grabs in key situations to keep the Renegades off the scoreboard.

Gonzalez turned the ball over to Gary Cornish who closed out the win with 2.0 scoreless frames to collect his first professional save.

The Cyclones will look to make it two in a row over the Renegades when they send Merandy Gonzalez to the mound on Thursday night for the middle game of a three-game set. Brooklyn will return home on Tuesday to open up a six game homestand against the Vermont Lake Monsters.
