SWEET SIX-CESS!  BROOKLYN WINS 6th STRAIGHT WITH 2-1 WIN

Aberdeen, MD – June 22, 2014 – The Cyclones continued their torrid start to the 2014 season, defeating the Aberdeen IronBirds by the score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. For Brooklyn, it was their sixth straight victory as they capped off an undefeated five-game road trip.

A day after both teams were held scoreless for 10 innings, the Cyclones wasted little time getting on the score board on Sunday afternoon. Tucker Tharp singled to start the game, stole second and advanced to third on a single from Amed Rosario. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Tomas Nido grounded into a double play, but Tharp was able to score and take the early 1-0 advantage after the first inning.

The teams matched zeroes in the second inning before Aberdeen would draw even in the bottom of the third. After Brooklyn starter Carlos Valdez retired the first batter in the inning, the southpaw quickly found himself in trouble. Aberdeen got three straight singles from Byron Capellan, Steve Wilkerson and Manny Hernandez to load the bases with one out. Alex Murphy took advantage of the scoring chance with a sacrifice fly, scoring Capellan to draw even at 1-1.

As has been the case all season, Brooklyn quickly responded, taking the lead once again in their next turn at-bat. In the top of the fourth, outfielder Michael Bernal connected on a 1-0 offering and deposited over the left field wall for a solo blast to give the Cyclones a 2-1 edge.

That is how the game would end, as Valdez and reliever Gaither Bumgardner kept the IronBirds off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game. Valdez (1-0) collected the win after tossing 5.0 innings, allowing just the single run on six hits while walking one and striking out three. Bumgardner was equally effective en route to his first save of the year. The righthander tossed 4.0 shutout frames, allowing only a walk and a hit while striking out five to close out the win.

The Cyclones return to MCU Park on Monday evening to take on the Hudson Valley Renegades at 7:00 PM. It will be “Brooklyn: The Musical” night at MCU Park as celebrate the neon lights of Broadway under the neon lights of Coney Island. The team will then head to Hudson Valley on Tuesday before coming home for a three-game set starting Wednesday. Tickets, which start at just $10 are on sale now by calling 718-507-TIXX, logging on to BrooklynCyclones.com or at the MCU Park box office.
