CYCLONES WIN SERIES FINALE IN EXTRA INNINGS 7-6

Brooklyn, NY – July 6th The Brooklyn Cyclones took two out of three games against the Williamsport Crosscutters, as they won tonight’s game by a score of 7-6 in 11 innings. John Mincone would earn his second win of the season, pitching two innings and giving up zero hits while striking out five batters.

The Cyclones were able to score in the first inning thanks to back-to-back hits from Richie Rodriguez and Brandon Nimmo. Rodriguez singled to right, and then with a hit-and-run on Nimmo lined up the middle to put runners on the corners and no outs. Phillip Evans came up and grounded into a double play, but Rodriguez was able to score and give the Cyclones an early 1-0 lead.

After Gabriel Ynoa set the Crosscutters down, one-two-three in the second inning, Stefan Sabol led off by reaching on an error by shortstop, Roman Quinn. After a wild pitch moved him to second, Kevin Plawecki ripped a single through the right side moving Sabol to third base with no out. Luis Gonzalez threw his second wild pitch of the inning allowing Sabol to score and moving Plawecki to second. Jayce Boyd would come up with no outs and struck out, bringing Nelfi Zapata to the plate who grounded out to the shortstop advancing Plawecki to third base. With Eudy Pina up and two outs, a passed ball by Chace Numata allowed Plawecki to score extending the early lead to 3-0. With the help of one error, two wild pitches and one passed ball, the Cyclones were able to score two runs.

In the top of the fourth the Crosscutters bats came to life as they were able to put up three runs. With one out and one on, Chris Serritella grounded into a fielder’s choice and Cameron Perkins singling the Crosscutters had two on with two out. Mitch Walding came up and hit a double off the base of the left field wall scoring both runners making it a 3-2 lead. Larry Greene Jr. would then come up as he singled to center fielder Brandon Nimmo who came up throwing to the plate, but Walding’s hand just beat the throw and the game was now tied 3-3.

Ynoa would struggle again in the fifth as he was unable to keep Williamsport off the board.. After Stephen Malcolm bunted for a single, Roman Quinn tripled to the left center field wall scoring Malcolm. Ynoa would throw a wild pitch to Numata, allowing Quinn to score. After two quick outs, Chris Serritella homered off the scoreboard over the left field wall giving them a 6-3 lead.

They Cyclones bats went silent until the seventh inning when they mounted a comeback led by the bat of Jayce Boyd. After a pitch to leadoff the bottom of the seventh inning hit Kevin Plawecki, Jayce Boyd hit his first professional home run over the left center field wall to bring the Cyclones within one run. After Eudy Pina grounded into a force out he stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Brandon Nimmo would step up with two outs and he laced a singled up the middle to tie the game at 6-6.

After not being able to capitalize in the ninth with runners on first and second with one out, the Cyclones didn’t waste time in the 11th. Kevin Plawecki led off the inning with a single through the left side and would then be pinch run for by Jonathan Clark. Williamsport pitcher, Jim Birmingham would throw the team’s fourth wild pitch of the night advancing Clark to second. Zapata would draw a walk to put runners at first and second with one out and Pina would come to the plate. Birmingham would throw his second wild pitch of the inning advancing each runner one base. With first base open, the Crosscutters elected to intentionally walk Pina to get to Richie Rodriguez. Birmingham was unable to throw a strike to Rodriguez as he walked him on four straight balls to end the game, and give the Cyclones a 7-6 win.
