Game Recaps

Brooklyn, NY – July 4th  Powered by home runs from Stefan Sabol and Brandon Nimmo, the Cyclones won their sixth straight, defeating the Williamsport Crosscutters 9-5 on Wednesday night at MCU Park.  Dawrin Frias (2-2) collected the win for Brooklyn, despite facing only one batter out of the bullpen.

The Cyclones didn’t want to wait until after the game to start the fireworks, as they put up four runs in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, a pitch hit Brandon Nimmo on his foot, and then Phillip Evans came up and hit a line drive single to left field. With runners on first and second and one out, Cole Frenzel came up and extended his hitting streak to six games as he hit a triple to the right center field wall scoring both runners giving Frenzel 12 RBI on the year. Stefan Sabol then became the 26th player to have a hit streak of 10 or more games as he ripped a double down the left field line scoring Frenzel. After Jayce Boyd flied out to center and Jeff Glenn walked, there were runners on first and second and Dimas Ponce hit a single through the left scoring Sabol, and giving the Cyclones a 4-0 lead.

Hilario was cruising through the first four innings of the game giving up only four hits and one unearned run with three strikeouts. After striking out Roman Quinn to start the fifth inning Hilario gave up a double to Brian Pointer, then a single to Cameron Perkins to put runners on first and third. After striking out Chris Serritella for the second time, a two out RBI single by Mitch Walding cut the deficit to two runs, as the Cyclones led 4-2. With two out, Yan Carlos Olmo stepped to the plate and hit a slow dribbler that Dimas Ponce threw away allowing Perkins to score and making the score 4-3 in favor of Brooklyn. The Crosscutters supplemental first round pick, Larry Greene Jr. then stepped to the plate hitting a double off the left center field wall scoring both Walding and Olmo, giving the Crosscutters a 5-4 lead. That would be Hilario’s last batter as he pitched 4.2 innings, giving up eight hits, three earned runs and striking out five batters. Darwin Frias then came in to face Logan Moore, as he grounded out to first base.

With the Cyclones coming to bat in the bottom of the fifth, the Cyclones coaching staff must have had words for the team as the team put up five runs in the inning, highlighted by a home run off the bat of Stefan Sabol and Brandon Nimmo. Leading off the inning, Sabol hit a home run over the left center wall and tying the game at five. After Boyd and Jeff Glenn reached on back-to-back singles, Ponce laid down a bunt that was thrown away by the pitcher, Nicholas Hanson, allowing Boyd to score and put Glenn on third and Ponce on second. With runners on second and third and no outs, the Cyclones were leading 6-5 with Eudy Pina and Richie Rodriguez due up. After Pina and Rodriguez were retired, Brandon Nimmo hit his second home run of the season as the ball landed in the right field bleachers giving the Cyclones a 9-5 lead.

The Cyclones bullpen threw a combined 4.1 innings, while giving up one hit, one walk, zero runs and striking out five batters en route to their sixth win in a row.
