WINNICK'S WIZARDRY GETS BROOKLYN WIN, 3-1

July 1st – Wappingers Falls, NY – A night after the bats took center stage, it was the pitching that propelled the Cyclones to a 3-1 win on Friday evening. Steve Winnick (1-0) collected the win in relief, needing only two pitches to work out of a bases loaded, one-out, jam in the fifth inning. Brian Harrison was the only Cyclone with multiple hits and his RBI single in the first inning proved to be the difference in the game.

It looked like the Brooklyn bats would pick up where they left off when they came to bat in the first inning when Jonathan Clark and Brandon Brown each reached base to start the game and were in scoring position after Javier Rodriguez moved them along with a sacrifice bunt. Luke Stewart opened the scoring with an RBI groundout and Harrison’s RBI single pushed across another run to make it 2-0.

Hudson Valley trimmed the lead in half, scoring a single run by way of a Jeff Malm RBI single in the fourth inning which made it 2-1. The Cyclones pushed their lead back to a pair thanks to a tremendous at-bat from J-Rod in the fifth. With Brandon Brown on first base and two outs, Rodriguez fouled off eight straight pitches before connecting on his team-leading eighth double of the year to push the score to 3-1.

In the bottom half of the inning it looked like the Renegades would claw back once again, loading the bases off of starter Marco Camarena with one out. But when Steven Winnick came into the game Juniel Querecuto smashed a liner to third base that Brian Harrison snagged on a fly, then stepped on third to get out the jam.

Randy Fontanez, Hunter Carnevale and Jeremy Gould combined to pitch the final 4.0 innings of the game allowing only three hits while striking out five. Gould struck out the side in the ninth to collect his third save of the season. Brooklyn will begin a four-game series against the rival Staten Island Yankees on Saturday night before returning to MCU Park on Sunday for a special 6:00 start to allow for a post-game Fireworks Extravaganza to kick off Independence Day.
