The Brooklyn Cyclones (28-13) dominated on both sides of the ball in an 11-3 rout of the Aberdeen Ironbirds (21-20) on Friday night. The 'Clones have won four in a row, and now stand six games over the Staten Island Yankees in the McNamara Division.
SS Rylan Sandoval led off the game with a bomb over the leftfield wall for his eighth home run of the season. Sandoval's solo shot was the third time this year that he has opened the game with a home run. Brooklyn scored seven runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run home run by 3B Brian Harrison -- his fifth home run in 19 games. CF Darrell Ceciliani swiped his 15th stolen base and added two hits for his 23rd multi-hit game. RF Cory Vaughn went 2-for-4 and led-off the seventh inning with a long ball to left field. Vaughn (pictured, by George Napolitano) leads the New York Penn League in home runs (10) and RBI (38). Friday also marked the fifth time this season that Vaughn and Sandoval have gone deep in the same game.
RHP Yohan Almonte dominated the Aberdeen lineup over seven innings, surrendering only an unearned run on three hits en route to his fourth win of the season. LHP Brian Needham faced seven batters in the eighth inning allowing two runs, and was relieved by RHP Samuel Taveras. Taveras induced an inning-ending double-play to halt an Aberdeen rally in the ninth inning and finish the game.
