THIS WEEK WITH WALLY

New Cyclones manager Wally Backman has reported to Spring Training and is working with several Mets minor leaguers in preparation for the upcoming season. Backman will be checking in from time to time throughout the off-season with updates for Brooklyn fans.

Hey Fans,

It’s been great to be back in camp, and see some familiar faces…guys I’ve coached with and played with. HoJo, Teufel, Straw ... teammates I played with during our 1986 WS championship season. The entire organization has the feel of being a part of a family, and it’s great for me to be back.I’m thrilled and honored to be a part of it, and I can’t wait to help build a sense of pride in the young players I’ll be working with.

Position players reported to camp last week and we got started right away on some of the most important building blocks of the game…fundamentals. As an organization, we focus on playing the game the right way…playing hard, and playing smart. We go over drills with the kids day in and day out. What to do in different situations, defense, baserunning. We want every player in the organization to be on the same page.

These are long days, but they are incredibly important and they set the tone for everything that follows. Next week, we’ll start playing games, and that’s when it gets fun! Some of the players I’m working with now will be in Brooklyn this summer. We’ll also get lots of players from the June draft. It’s a pretty interesting process, as we evaluate all the talent and focus on the areas that each player needs to work on. In the next few weeks, we’ll start to see some things take shape, and as it gets closer to June, I’ll get a sense of which players might be coming to Brooklyn with me.

I know the weather’s warming up a bit up in New York, and that means the summer’s not far away. I can’t wait to get to Brooklyn and take the field with the Cyclones.

I’ll check back in soon and let you know more of what we’re up to down here in St. Lucie.

Wally
