CYCLONES CHOP DOWN 'CUTTERS IN EXTRA TO COMPLETE SWEEP

BROOKLYN, NY – July 6, 2015 – Nine innings just wasn’t enough Monday night on Coney Island.

The ten-inning affair featured quality pitching and shoddy defense the entire way through but in the end, the brooms were out in Brooklyn. It took extra innings, another stellar performance from Tyler Badamo and four Williamsport errors to send the MCU Park crowd home happy as the Cyclones beat the Crosscutters 2-1.

Tyler Badamo dominated the Williamsport lineup from the start, surrendering just two hits and throwing 48 pitches through the first four innings. In total, Badamo allowed just four hits and one unearned run while striking out a season-high six batters over seven innings. In his last two starts (14.0 innings pitched) the Long Island native has struck out ten batters while not allowing a single earned run. The game remained scoreless as Williamsport pitchers Tyler Gilbert and Luke Leftwich did their part to hold the Cyclones at bay.

Brooklyn and Williamsport matched zeros in a tightly contested pitcher’s duel until the bottom of the sixth when the Cyclones broke through. Shortstop Alfredo Reyes led off the inning with a bunt single before stealing second base. The next batter, lead-off man Tucker Tharp, hit a ground ball to third that Williamsport third baseman Jan Hernandez threw into the first base dugout, allowing Reyes to score from second and break the scoreless tie.

The game remained 1-0 until the top of the seventh when the Crosscutters tied the game with an unearned run against Badamo. With one out, shortstop Josh Tobias hit a well-struck triple to deep center. A ground ball error was ruled against Brooklyn shortstop Alfredo Reyes but the ball remained on the infield, putting runners at the corners with one out. Williamsport catcher Austin Bossart then hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game, giving the Crosscutters their only run of the contest.

As the game reached it latter stages in a deadlock, Brooklyn got exceptional pitching out of the bullpen from Corey Taylor and Alex Palsha. The two righties each threw a scoreless inning and surrendered zero hits. Despite their dominance on the mound, Brooklyn struggled at the plate, amassing just three hits over the course of the first nine innings. As extra innings began, eventual winning pitcher Christian Montgomery (2-0) took over and threw yet another scoreless inning out of the Cyclones’ bullpen, striking out the side after working around a single and an error.

The bottom of the tenth inning led to all smiles from the Brooklyn crowd as the Cyclones managed to push the winning run across without getting a hit in the frame. Michael Bernal pinch-hit to begin the inning and reached base on a walk before Jeff Diehl came in to run at first and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Tharp hit a comebacker off the leg of pitcher Anthony Sequeira. In an attempt to cut Diehl off from advancing, Sequeira threw wildly to third base. As the baseball rolled into left field foul territory, Diehl came home with the winning run and sealed a 2-1 Cyclones win.

The Cyclones completed the three game sweep of Williamsport, improved to 12-5 on the season and extended their McNamara Division lead to 2.5 games over Staten Island.

After a rare off day, the Cyclones will play three straight against the Hudson Valley Renegades. RHP Gaby Almonte (1-1, 3.71) will take the mound for the Cyclones on Wednesday evening. Brooklyn returns home on Thursday as LHP Blake Taylor makes his first start at MCU Park and the Cyclones host Hudson Valley. It will also be Jersday Thursday at the ballpark and the first 3,000 fans will receive a black and red jersey courtesy of Verizon. Tickets, which start at just $10, are on sale now at the MCU Park Box Office, by calling 718-507-TIXX, or right here at BrooklynCyclones.com
