The 2013 Brooklyn Cyclones have arrived on Coney Island and will take the field for their first full practice this evening at MCU Park. The newest edition of Brooklyn’s Boys of Summer, features some familiar faces as well as one very familiar name.
L.J. Mazzilli, Mets 4th round draft pick and son of former New York Mets outfielder Lee Mazzilli, is the highest drafted player from the recent MLB Draft that will call Brooklyn home to start the season. The second baseman starred for the UConn Huskies during his four year collegiate career, batting .354 (92-260) during his senior campaign with 29 stolen bases and 51 RBI en route to being tabbed as the District II Player of the Year.
Joining Mazzilli up the middle will be 2012 first round selection Gavin Checchini, who had a brief stint with the Cyclones last season. The 19-year-old shortstop was selected 12th overall last season and is the highest drafted player to ever suit up for the Cyclones as the team enters their 13th season.
The roster is expected to undergo some changes in the coming days as the 2013 draft class continues to sign and report to Brooklyn. Be sure to check out BrooklynCyclones.com, FB.com/BrooklynCyclones or @BKCyclones in the coming days for any roster updates.
The Cyclones open their 2013 schedule on Monday with a 7:00 PM contest against the rival Yankees in Staten Island before returning home to take on the Baby Bombers on Tuesday, June 18th for the Home Opener.
Tickets are still available for Opening Day, and the remainder of the 2013 slate, by calling 718-507-TIXX, visiting the MCU Park box office, or at BrooklynCyclones.com.
