Brooklyn, NY – September 4th – Brooklyn took a 9-1 beating by the Lowell Spinners on Tuesday night as the Cyclones were outhit 13-6. The Cyclones’ magic number to clinch a playoff spot sits at one, meaning a win tomorrow or one loss by Batavia in their doubleheader puts the Cyclones in the playoffs for the fourth straight season.
Mike Miller began the game with a line drive single to center field before Mookie Betts reached on a throwing error by pitcher Gabriel Ynoa. The ball was hit right back to Ynoa, but when he turned and fired to get the runner at second, the throw was high and went beyond the reach of second baseman Juan Gamboa. With Miller now at third base, Deven Marrero grounded out to third baseman Dimas Ponce to plate the first run. Jake Davies then hit an RBI single to left to score Betts.
The Cyclones had the bases loaded with nobody out in the bottom of the fifth, but grabbed only one run. Two walks sandwiched a Dimas Ponce single to put all three runners on base. Brandon Nimmo was then called out on strikes before Phillip Evans singled on a ground ball to center to score Juan Gamboa. Ponce also tried to come home on the play, but was thrown out at the plate for the second out. After Mike Augliera replaced Justin Haley on the mound, Jayce Boyd flied out to center, stranding Nelfi Zapata at second.
In the sixth, Lowell hit reliever Matt Bowman for two runs. Marrero and Davies hit back-to-back singles before a sacrifice bunt by Nick Moore moved both runners into scoring position. Aneury Tavarez then hit a two-run line drive single to center field to give the Spinners a 4-1 lead.
Lowell tacked on another couple runs in the seventh. Marrero hit a double down the left field line to score Miller, who had singled. Davies then struck out swinging, but reached first on a passed ball. Moore followed up with a single to score Betts.
Tim Roberson hit a two-run home run in the eighth to make it 8-1; and later in the frame, Betts had a line drive double to left to plate Miller for his third run scored of the night.
Brooklyn starting pitcher Gabriel Ynoa suffered the loss after going 5.0 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Matt Bowman and Beck Wheeler each threw 2.0 innings of relief. Bowman gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits, while Wheeler surrendered three earned runs on three hits. Wheeler struck out the side in the ninth.
