HILARIO BOUNCED EARLY AS CYCLONES FALL IN STATEN ISLAND

Staten Island, NY – August 26th – After defeating the Yankees 11-0 at home yesterday, the Cyclones were avenged in Staten Island on Sunday, as they fell 12-2.

Staten Island jumped to an early lead in the first, hitting Brooklyn starting pitcher Julian Hilario for seven runs (five earned). Back-to-back doubles by Claudio Custodio and Fu-Lin Kuo put the Yankees on the board. Peter O’Brien then singled, before Ravel Santana reached on a fielding error by shortstop Phillip Evans to make it 2-0. Up next, Gregory Bird hit a two-run double, but was thrown out at third by second baseman Jeff Reynolds. The Yankees then plated another two runs off four consecutive hits before Hilario was pulled from the mound.

Tim Peterson came in from the bullpen and got Custodio to ground into a force out, but Daniel Lopez came home on the play. Peterson then allowed another run in the following frame as Bird hit a solo home run to center field.

The Cyclones ran into more trouble in the fourth. O’Brien hit a two-out single to left and was plated on a single by Santana. A throwing error by Peterson allowed Santana to advance to second, and he later scored on a single off the bat of Bird to give Staten Island a ten-run advantage.

Brooklyn finally managed to put up two runs in the top of the fifth when Brandon Nimmo homered to right, scoring Reynolds.

Matt Duran led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run for the Yankees. Jose Rosario then doubled and crossed the plate on a double by Daniel Lopez to make it 12-2.

Hilario suffered the loss as Derek Varnadore earned the win for Staten Island. Varnadore allowed two earned runs on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts over 5.0 innings.

Peterson tossed 3.2 innings of relief, surrendering three earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Paul Sewald gave up two runs in three innings of work. He allowed four hits and fanned five batters. John Mincone pitched a scoreless eighth with one hit.

The Cyclones will travel to Aberdeen tomorrow for a two-game series against the IronBirds. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. The Cyclones will return to MCU Park on Thursday, August 30th to play the Hudson Valley Renegades at 7:00 PM. The first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive a red Cyclones jersey courtesy of Domino’s Pizza. Tickets are available now by visiting the MCU box office, calling 718-507-TIXX, or CLICKING HERE.
