The Brooklyn Cyclones (41-23) beat the Vermont Lake Monsters (29-34) by a score of 3-1 on Tuesday night, behind a solid performance by Collin McHugh (8-2, 2.84).
McHugh (pictured, by George Napolitano) earned his eighth win, tying him with teammate Mark Cohoon for the New York-Penn League lead. In 6.0 innings, he allowed just one runj on three hits, and struck out five batters to also tie for the league lead with 77 Ks.
On the offensive side, the Cyclones continued their trend of scoring early as 2B Justin Valdespin reached base on a bunt single in the first inning. 3B Richard Lucas singled to right, moving Valdespin to third, and RF Luis Rivera drove in the run to give Brooklyn a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Rivera led off the inning with a triple, and scored on a Sam Honeck sacrifice fly ball to left field. In the fifth inning, C Dock Doyle led off with a triple of his own, and scored on a wild pitch to give Brooklyn its third and final run.
The Cyclones' bullpen closed the door on Vermont with RHP Jake Goldberg pitching 2.0 pefect innings of relief, and RHP Michael Powers closing out the game for his league-leading 15th save of the season.
The Cyclones close out their three-game series against Vermont on Wednesday, August 26th as Brooklyn celebrates Bark in the Park night presented by Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals. All fans are encouraged to bring their dogs out. In addition, it will also be Weiner Wednesday, with Buy One Get One Free Hot Dogs.
Fans are also encouraged to get to the game extra early, to watch Mets' star David Wright take batting practice with the Cyclones.
