The Brooklyn Cyclones (23-11) topped the Staten Island Yankees (19-15) by a score of 4-2 on Friday night, thanks in part to a stellar performance by LHP Mark Cohoon.
Cohoon (6-1) earned his league-leading sixth win with 6.0 shutout innings, in which he allowed just three hits. Cohoon (pictured, by George Napolitano) struck out three batters and improved his ERA on the season to 2.15. Cohoon was relieved in the seventh inning by LHP Matias Carrillo, who tossed two perfect innings and struck out three. Carrillo has not allowed an earned run all season. RHP Michael Powers came on in the ninth to close the door in a non-save situation, and allowed two runs, but struck out two batters.
OF Luis Rivera led the Brooklyn offense, going 3-for-5 with a solo home run -- his third of the year -- and two RBI. DH Dock Doyle notched two hits and scored a run, and 1B Sam Honeck had one hit and scored twice. The Cyclones' 2-3-4 hitters -- Doyle, Honeck, and Rivera -- accounted for all four of Brooklyn's runs.
The Cyclones return to KeySpan Park on Saturday, July 25th to again take on the rival Staten Island Yankees. The first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a free Gym Bag, courtesy of GEICO. In addition, the game will be followed by a fireworks show from inside the ballpark!
