Brooklyn lost the first of a two-game series to the rival Staten Island Yankees in their first game back from the All-Star break by a score of 3-1. The loss is just Brooklyn's sixth at home and brings the team's overall record to 38-20, maintaining their nine game lead for first place in the McNamara Division.
The Cyclones' pitching was in full stride on Wednesday night, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out an impressive 16 batters, but were unable to get the win as the offense tallied just one run. RHP Jonathan Kountis, in his first game back with the Cyclones since being moved to Kingsport, threw five scoreless innings, surrendering two hits and four walks while striking out nine to double his season total. LHP Adam Kolarek (1-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out two. RHP Daniel Carela came on in the eighth to toss 1.2 innings, allowing one run on one hit while striking out four. Cyclone newcomer T.J. Chism came in to record the final out of the ninth inning with a strikeout of the only batter he faced.
Brooklyn's bats were held to one run for just the fourth time all season, tallying five hits in the process. SS Wilfredo Tovar went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one stolen base in his first game wearing a Cyclones uniform. 1B Jeff Flagg tallied the only RBI for Brooklyn on a long double to centerfield in the first inning. Flagg was 1-for-3 with one RBI and one walk on the night. CF Darrell Ceciliani and 2B J.B. Brown rounded out the offense, recording one hit apiece and bringing their averages to .362 and .310, respectively. C Blake Forsythe showed off his arm behind the plate throwing out two consecutive runners at second base in the first inning.
The Cyclones return home on Tuesday, August 24th to take on the Hudson Valley Renegades in their first game back after a five-game road trip. That night, the first 2,500 fans will receive a "Property Of" T-shirt presented by Men's Senior Baseball League. Tuesday is also Bark in the Park night presented by Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals and Purina Dog Chow.
