The Cyclones came out on the losing end of a pitchers' duel on Monday night, falling to the Hudson Valley Renegades by a score of 3-1. The loss is just the fourth at home for Brooklyn all season, and the fourth loss in the team's last 20 games, overall. Brooklyn's record is a league-leading 30-14, and the Cyclones are 7.5 games above the second-place Renegades in the McNamara Division.
The Cyclones pitching staff had a strong showing, not allowing a run to cross the plate through the first five innings while striking out seven. RHP A.J. Pinera got the start and threw six innings, surrendering two runs on seven hits while striking out five. Both runs came on a two-out home run in the sixth inning. RHP Wes Wrenn made his eighth appearance in relief this season, tossing two innings and allowing one unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts. RHP Daniel Carela came on in relief to pitch a scoreless ninth inning, keeping the Cyclones within striking distance.
Brooklyn's bats were in short supply on Monday night, being held to two or fewer runs at home for just the third time this season. LF Cody Holliday drove in both Cyclones runs -- notching one RBI on a triple to right field in the third inning and another with a ninth-inning RBI ground out. Holliday went 1-for-3 on the night. RF Will Cherry (pictured, by George Napolitano) went 1-for-3 with one walk and scored both Brooklyn runs. 2B James Schroeder went 1-for-2 with a double. Brian Harrison pinch hit for Schroeder in the ninth and hit a double to left field, leading to Holliday's RBI groundout. DH Darrell Ceciliani, CF Cory Vaughn, and C Blake Forsythe rounded off the offense with one hit apiece.
