Jason Vargas stellar but BKLYN defeated 2-1

STATEN ISLAND, NY (July 9, 2018) – Jason Vargas shined for the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Short Season, Class A affiliate of the New York Mets, but Staten Island rallied against the bullpen to win 2-1 Monday night in the series finale at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

BIG MOMENTS

  • Jason Vargas, in his first rehab start since going on the Mets disabled list on June 20, struck out nine batters over six innings of one-hit ball. Vargas threw an efficient 64 pitches, 49 for strikes.
  • Seventh-inning home runs from Mike Ford and Miguel Flames against Cyclones reliever Josh Walker gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead.
  • Anthony Dirocie’s two-out RBI double to right field plated Chase Chambers in the top of the fourth inning gave the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.
  • Walter Rasquin, rehabbing with Brooklyn, went 1-3 with a hit by pitch.
