Staten Island, NY – August 25, 2017 – The Cyclones dropped their 14th straight game, falling to the Staten Island Yankees by the score of 3-2 at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. Tonight also marked the 14th time in 22 games during the month of August that the team has scored two runs or less. Jose Geraldo (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits over 5.0 innings with a walk and a strikeout. Offensively, Jeremy Vasquez had two of Brooklyn's five hits to lead the charge.
The Yankees got on the board early, scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the first. Geraldo struck out Wilkerman Garcia to start the frame, but strike three eluded catcher Scott Manea, allowing him to reach. A wild pitch move Garcia into scoring position and a one out double from Kendall Coleman plated a run to give Staten Island a 1-0 edge.
After trading zeroes in the second, Brooklyn drew even in the top of the third. With one out, Walter Rasquin was hit by a pitch and then hustled his way to third on a groundout to the pitcher that went for out number two. After Jose Medina was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners, the pair of Cyclones speedsters attempted a double steal with Rasquin sliding home safely to knot things at 1-1.
But Staten Island scored a single run in the fourth – again, unearned – and another in the fifth on Andy Diaz’s second home run of the season to push their lead to 3-1.
That’s how it would stay until the ninth when Jeremy Vasquez connected on his first home run as a Cyclone to cut the deficit to 3-2, but Brooklyn would get no closer.
The Cyclones return home to MCU Park on Saturday for the middle game of the commuter series with the Yankees. It will be Star Wars Night and the first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a Light Saber Mini Bat, plus post-game fireworks.
