CYCLONES DROP 5-4 TO THE 'BIRDS

ABERDEEN, MD — September 1, 2016 — The Cyclones came up short as they fell to the Aberdeen IronBirds by the score of 5-4 at Ripken Stadium. For Brooklyn, it was their fourth loss of season to the IronBirds. Michael Paez went 1-for-3 with a double and two-RBI.

Cyclones starting pitcher Gabriel Llanes looked good tossing three scoreless frames before Aberdeen opened the game up in the bottom of the fourth. The righthander ran into some trouble after Cole Billingsley singled to center field. After stealing second Austin Hays hit a liner to right putting runners on the corners with no outs. Preston Palmeiro made sure Aberdeen capitalized knocking a two-RBI triple up right field line and then scoring on a wild pitch that gave the IronBirds a 3-0 lead.

Brooklyn had an answer for the IronBirds as BAM-BAM Brandon Brosher opened the fifth inning up with a blast over the left field wall to close the lead to two. Gene Cone singled and stole second before Arnaldo Berrios reached on a fielding error. With two runners on and two outs second baseman Michael Paez stroked a double to tie the game 3-3.

Gabriel Llanes continued into the sixth inning, but he didn't make it out as he let up two more runs in the frame giving the IronBirds 5-3 advantage. Llanes finished the night clumping five runs in two of his 5.1 innings pitched and striking out five.

The Cyclones were able to close the lead to 5-4 in the top of the eighth after Desmond Lindsay reached on a walk. He took to second on a wild pitch and came home after Colby Woodmansee hit a liner to center field. However, that is all she wrote as the score would stay the same throughout.

RHP Alejandro Castro, RHP Jordan Humphreys RHP Austin McGeorge combined for 2.2 scoreless innings in relief of Gabriel Llanes to close out the game.

The Cyclones will look to bounce back tomorrow night as they head into game two with IronBirds on Friday night before returning to MCU Park for their 2016 home finale on Sunday against the Staten Island Yankees. It will be Fan Appreciation Day at the ballpark and fans are encouraged to arrive early as Cyclones players will be lined up at the front gates to sign autographs for fans when gates open at 4:30 PM. Tickets start at just $10 and are available by calling 718-507-TIXX, logging on to BrooklynCyclones.com or in person at the MCU Park Box Office.
