TIGERS CLAW BACK FOR 5-4 WIN

BROOKLYN, NY – July 2, 2016 – Brooklyn jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but the Tigers quickly clawed back and held on for a 5-4 win on Saturday night at MCU Park. RHP Gabriel Llanes allowed five runs, one earned, over 5.0 innings with a key error from Colby Woodmansee leading to four unearned run in the top of the second inning.

Gene Cone got things started for the Cyclones, leading off for Brooklyn and blasting a line drive single to left field. The bases were quickly loaded after Jacob Zanon and Jay Jabs walked followed by a RBI blast to right field by shortstop Colby Woodmansee’s that sent Cone and Zanon home for the first scores of the night. Brandon Brosher continued his four game RBI streak after knocking a line drive that allowed Jabs to bring in another run. The Cyclones squeezed in one more run after Woodmansee took home after a single from Arnaldo Berrios giving the Cyclones a 4-0 advantage in the early stages of the game. Llanes made his fourth start of the season and after being staked to a 4-0 lead, quickly gave it back. Sam Machonis started the top of the second with an infield single and Tanner Donnels reached on an error by Woodmansee to put a pair aboard with nobody out. Hunter Swiling followed with a single to load the bases, but Llanes has able to bear down, retiring the next two batters, one on an RBI groundout that made it 4-1, but Will Savage followed with an RBI single and Cole Bauml laced a two-RBI double to knot the score at 4-4.

Things would stay that way, as the teams traded zeroes before the Tigers broke the knot in the top of the fifth, taking a 5-4 lead when a single from Blaise Salter allowed Bauml to score.

Llanes allowed seven total hits in 5.0 innings pitched and matched his career high of six strikeouts before Alejandro Castro, Adam Atkins and Taylor Henry tossed a combined 4.0 shutout innings of relief.

An attempted comeback rose from the Cyclones in the bottom of the ninth when Cone shot a double into left field to put Dale Burdick in scoring position, but back-to-back strike outs from Zanon and Jabs allowed the Tigers to take the 5-4 victory.

The Cyclones will transform into the Coney Island Franks to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Nathan’s and will look to defeat the Tigers in the final game of the series tomorrow July 3. The first 2,000 fans will receive a Coney Island Franks Cap. Also stick around to celebrate fourth of July weekend with us and enjoy a post game firework show.
