CYCLONES LEAVE LOWELL WITHOUT A LOSS, COMPLETE THE SWEEP


LOWELL, MA – July 29, 2014 – The Cyclones completed a three-game sweep of the Lowell Spinners on Tuesday afternoon, downing the Red Sox affiliate by the score of 4-1. RHP Casey Meisner collected his first win in nearly a calendar year after tossing 5.0 strong innings, allowing just three hits and one run while walking one and striking out six. With the win, the Cyclones climbed back over the .500 mark and ensure that they will return to MCU Park with a share of the Wild Card lead.

After matching zeroes in the first and second inning, the Cyclones drew first blood in the top of the third. Tomas Nido started the threat with a one-out single before advancing to second on a wild pitch. With a runner in scoring position, Anthony Chavez smashed a line drive down the first base, line that was too hot to handle allowing Nido to score from second and give Brooklyn the early 1-0 lead. With Chavez on second base thanks to the fielding error, Joe Tuschak, who returned from injury after being sidelined since July 18th, send a booming double off the right field wall to push the Cyclones advantage to 2-0.

Lowell responded quickly, plating their first run in the bottom of the frame courtesy of a Sam Travis two-out RBI double, but that is all that Brooklyn starter Casey Meisner would allow. The tall righthander retired the final seven batters he faced to complete his 5.0 innings and collect his first win since July 30, 2013 with the Gulf Coast Mets.

In the top of the sixth, Brooklyn would pad their lead. Tuschak and Michael Conforto each worked a walk to put a pair of runners aboard for Michael Bernal. The Cyclones rightfielder took advantage of the scoring chance with a RBI single that scored Tuschak before Tyler Moore plated Conforto with a single of his own to make it 4-1 in favor of the Cyclones.

LHP Carlos Valdez and RHP Brandon Welch picked up right where Meisner left off, allowing just a single base runner through 3.0 combined innings of relief to set up LHP Shane Bay, who tossed a scoreless ninth for his ninth save of the year.

The Cyclones return to MCU Park on Wednesday evening against the Auburn Doubledays to open up a six-game homestand. For Wednesday, all tickets in the ballpark will cost just $10 and it will also be NYPD Night.
