SPIKES USE THE FORCE TO BEAT BKLYN, 4-1

Brooklyn, NY – August 9, 2013 -- The Cyclones dropped the opener of a three game series with the State College Spikes, 4-1. There were two separate rain delays on the evening, the first lasting 28 minutes and the second lasting 1 hour 28 minutes.

Miller Diaz didn’t look to have his best stuff tonight as he struggled right away in the first inning, but was able to avoid any damage. However, in the second inning, the Spikes struck for two runs. Mason Katz led off with a walk and moved to second on a walk by Brett Wiley. With Alex De Leon up to bat and runners on first and second, Diaz threw a pitch to the backstop advancing each runner one base. De Leon then lifted a fly ball to center field that was deep enough for Katz to score giving the Spikes the 1-0 lead. Wiley was still on second and then went to third on the second wild pitch of the inning by Diaz. After striking out Jimmy Bosco for the second out, Steven Ramos then singled, scoring Wiley and extending the lead to 2-0.

State College would add to the lead in the fourth inning with two more runs. Carson Kelly led the inning off with a double and then scored on a triple by Katz to the right center field wall. Wiley then singled in Katz for the third consecutive hit of the inning, giving the Spikes the 4-0 lead.

Brooklyn scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning off pitcher, Jhonny Polanco. L.J. Mazzilli started the inning off by doubling to the left center field wall and moved to third on a single by Alex Sanchez. After James Roche struck out for the first out, Matt Oberste flew out to deep center field scoring Mazzilli from third, cutting the Spikes lead to 4-1.

The Cyclones will look to rebound tomorrow, August 10 at 6:00 PM against the State College Spikes when John Gant steps on the mound. For tickets call 718-507-TIXX, visit the ticket office, or CLICK HERE.
