CYCLONES TAKE DOWN SCRAPPERS, 7-5

Brooklyn, NY -- July 17, 2013 -- The Cyclones defeated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Wednesday, 7-5, on a night in which Juan Gamboa hit the Cyclones first home run at MCU Park this season. L.J. Mazzilli added three hits to raise his average to .315, and Seth Lugo picked up his second win of the year.

The Cyclones struck early with an RBI double by Mazzilli. Jared King set the tone with a leadoff double to start the game, and advanced to third on a groundball out to the pitcher by Juan Gamboa. Mazzilli then hit a rocket into right centerfield to score King from third, giving Brooklyn a 1-0 lead at the end of one.Mazzilli extends his hitting to streak to seven games and continues to put up big numbers in the month of July.

Brooklyn went to work again in the bottom of the third managing to make it all the way around the batting order, scoring five runs. Attempting to move runners into scoring position, Juan Gamboa placed a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by pitcher Harold Guerrero, but Guerrero threw the ball away from first base, allowing Anthony Chavez to score from first. Then with Biondi on third base, Mazzilli connected for his second RBI on a sac fly to center field, making it 3-0 Cyclones. But the Cyclones weren’t done there. Later in the inning after an RBI single from Alex Sanchez, Eris Peguero drove in a run of his own on an infield single that scored King from third. On the same play, a throwing error by second baseman Paul Hendrix brought Sanchez home, extending the Cyclones lead to 6-0.

Pitching for the Cyclones was starter Seth Lugo, who tossed a season high 5.1 IP. Lugo finished allowing two runs, five hits, and striking out three. Lugo got into a little bit of trouble in the top of the sixth after allowing runners to reach first and second on a double and a walk, but was bailed out by reliever David Wynn who struck out the last two batters he faced to get out of the inning.

In the bottom half of the sixth, the Cyclones scored in a way unusual to them at home, the long ball. Juan Gamboa hit a solo home run just over the right field fence, giving the Cyclones a 7-2 lead. The home run by Gamboa was his first of the year, and Brooklyn’s fourth long ball of the season.

The Valley Scrappers would score two more in the top of the seventh inning off of RHP Kevin McGowan to cut the deficit to three, but McGowan bounced back taking away the chance for a comeback. McGowan pitched the last three innings for the Cyclones to record his first save of the season.
