CYCLONES RALLY TO BEAT IRONBIRDS, 5-3

Aberdeen, -- July 6, 2013 -- The Cyclones bats came to life in the top of the seventh inning to score three runs to come back and beat the Aberdeen IronBirds, 5-3. The big hit came from Patrick Biondi when he laced a single to center field that scored Jorge Rivero and Anthony Chavez, tying the game at three. Biondi had a great day at the plate going 3-4 with two RBI and a walk. It was Matt Oberste who delivered the game winning run on a sac fly to left field scoring Biondi. It marks the second time this week that Oberste has delivered the game winning run on a sac fly, the other coming against the Staten Island Yankees on Wednesday.

The Cyclones got on the board early thanks to Biondi using his speed to make things happen. Biondi led off with a single and would go on to steal second with one out in the inning. With two outs and Jared King at the plate, King hit a single to center field scoring Biondi from second and giving the Cyclones a quick 1-0 lead. King had a solid day with the bat, finishing 3-4 with an RBI.

Brooklyn’s lead would not last long, with the IronBirds scoring once in each the third, fourth, and fifth innings to give them a 3-1 lead. After Jared Breen stole second for the IronBirds, Kris Richards came through with an RBI single up the middle to put Aberdeen on the board. The IronBirds took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on an Austin Wynn single to right field scoring Mike Yastzemski from second. They tacked on another in the fifth thanks to a long ball from Conor Bierfeldt.

The Cyclones came back with a rally in the top of the seventh inning, and after Oberste gave the Cyclones the lead, L.J. Mazzilli added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Mazzilli singled to center field to score Biondi from second, making it 5-3 Cyclones. Biondi scored three of the Cyclones five runs.

Robert Gsellman
allowed his first earned run of the season in his fourth start with the Cyclones, but got the no decision. Gsellman allowed three runs in five innings of work, striking out six, and now has a 1.23 ERA. Paul Paez came in relief and pitched an inning of shutout ball to receive his first win with the Cyclones this season. John Mincone closed things up in the ninth to record his third save.

The Cyclones will return to MCU Park when they take on the Lowell Spinners on Sunday, July 7 at 5:00 PM. For tickets call 718-507-TIXX, go to the MCU ticket window or click here.
