ROCHE'S WALKOFF HEROICS GIVE BKLYN 13 INNING WIN

Brooklyn, NY -- June 23, 2013 -- It was another dramatic finish in Coney Island on Sunday but this time the Cyclones came out on top, defeating the Hudson Valley Renegades 4-3. With two outs in the top of the 13th inning, James Roche played the role of hero and hit a hard double that was just out of the reach of Renegades leftfielder Granden Goetzman that sent lead runner Jared King home to give the Cyclones the victory. The Cyclones handed the Renegades their first defeat of the season, after trailing for the majority of the game.

The Cyclones starting pitching staff continues their hot start to the season, this time behind LHP Dario Alvarez, but the Cyclones did not provide Alvarez the run support he needed for a win. Alvarez had not pitched in affiliated baseball since 2009 when he spent time with the DSL Phillies, before playing in leagues in Panama, Venezuela, and Japan. In his debut with the Cyclones and return to affiliated ball, Alvarez finished with 4.1 IP, allowing just one earned run on six hits, and three strikeouts.

Behind 1-0 in the bottom of the third, the Cyclones were able to get back in the game with some clutch hitting from shortstop Gavin Cecchini. Cecchini singled to right field off Renegades pitcher Steve Kirsch to drive in Anthony Chavez from second tying the game at one. Chavez had reached on a fielder’s choice after catcher Tomas Nido got the inning started with a leadoff single. Cecchini went 2-6 with an RBI collecting his third multi hit game of the season, all coming at home.

Alvarez was replaced by RHP Darwin Frias in the top of the fifth. Frias struggled early on, giving up two key runs in the sixth, but managed to keep it there until he was replaced by David Wynn in the top of the ninth. Frias allowed three consecutive doubles by Ariel Soriano, Jonathan Quinonez, and Oscar Hernandez in the top of the sixth that garnered two runs that made it 3-1 Renegades. Following Frias’ exit, Wynn and LHP John Mincone combined to pitch the final 5.0 innings, not allowing any base runners and striking out eight.

Down 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Patrick Biondi tied the game at 3 with an RBI single that sent it into extras, which gave the Cyclones the extra life they needed to eventually set Roche up for the game winning hit.

The Cyclones will return to MCU Park when they again take on the Hudson Valley Renegades on Saturday, June 29 at 6:00 PM. For tickets call 718-507-TIXX, go to the MCU ticket window or CLICK HERE.
