Game Recaps

Brooklyn, NY – September 3rd – Kevin Plawecki led the Cyclones offense, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as Brooklyn defeated the Lowell Spinners 4-1. With the win, the Cyclones magic number now sits at 1, meaning one more win or a loss by Batavia puts the Cyclones in the playoffs for the fourth straight season.

Luis Cessa earned his fifth win, after throwing 8.2 innings. He allowed just one earned run on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Tyler Vanderheiden came in to get the last out of the ninth and collect his twelfth save.

Mike Miller led off the top of the fourth with a line drive single to center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jose Colorado. Deven Marrero then grounded out to short, allowing Miller to take third. Following, Jake Davies singled on a line drive to right to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead.

Brooklyn evened the score in the bottom half of the frame. Kevin Plawecki hit a one-out single and advanced to second when Nelfi Zapata walked. Lowell starter Francellis Montas was then replaced on the mound by Francisco Taveras. Taveras allowed a run-scoring single to Juan Gamboa to tie the game at 1-1.

Montas went just 3.2 innings, allowing the one earned run on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

The Cyclones took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. After Dimas Ponce drew a one-out walk, three consecutive singles by Phillip Evans, Jayce Boyd, and Kevin Plawecki plated the run. Brooklyn had a chance for more, but left the bases loaded as Jorge Rivero struck out swinging and Nelfi Zapata grounded out to end the inning.

Brooklyn picked up a couple insurance runs in the eighth. Jorge Rivero led things off, reaching first on a fielding error by Lowell third baseman Nick Moore. Nelfi Zapata then walked, and Richie Rodriguez came in to pinch-run for him. Juan Gamboa hit a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners into scoring position before Maikis De La Cruz was intentionally walked to load the bases. Brandon Nimmo then grounded into a force out at home for the second out of the inning. Dimas Ponce walked to score Rodriguez, making it 3-1 before Evans singled to plate De La Cruz, giving the Cyclones a three-run advantage.
