BULLPEN FAILS CYCLONES IN 5-1 LOSS TO YANKS

Staten Island, NY – August 24 – For the second night in a row, the Brooklyn Cyclones saw a one-run lead in the late innings disappear, this time to the Staten Island Yankees en route to a 5-1 loss on Friday evening. The late inning meltdown wasted an outstanding performance from Brooklyn starter Luis Mateo, who tossed 7.0 shutout innings allowing only five hits and a walk while striking out six.

On a night where runs were at a premium early on, the Cyclones scored their lone run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth. Eudy Pina and Brandon Nimmo each singled to start the rally before a failed bunt attempt by Dimas Ponce and a swinging bunt from Phillip Evans put runners on second and third with two-outs. Kevin Plawecki was next up for the Cyclones and smashed a line drive that was too hot to handle for Staten Island third baseman Matt Duran, allowing Pina to score to give Brooklyn a 1-0 advantage.

With Mateo dealing for Brooklyn, not allowing a runner past second base through his 7.0 innings on the mound, that is how it would stay until the bottom of the eighth inning when the righthander handed the ball off to Cyclones bullpen. Craig Hansen, who is on a rehab assignment with Brooklyn, struggled with his control and did not record an out. The righthander walked the first batter he faced, then hit a batter before allowing a single to Exicardo Cayones to load the bases with nobody out. Hansen then plunked Ravel Santana, his second hit batter of the frame, to force home a run and knot the score at 1-1. Beck Wheeler, who was tagged with the loss on Thursday night after allowing an 11th inning home run that would prove to be the difference in the game, once again fell victim to the long ball as Matt Duran greeted Wheeler with a grand slam home run over the left field wall giving the Baby Bombers a 5-1 advantage, which is how the game would end.

Despite the loss, the Cyclones remain 3.0 games in front of the Batavia Muckdogs, who also lost on Friday evening, in the race for the NYPL Wild Card. Brooklyn will look to rebound on Saturday evening when they send Hansel Robles (4-1), who leads the NYPL in ERA, when they take on Staten Island in the middle game of a three-game set. Saturday night will feature post-game fireworks, Cyclones visor giveaway and a special jersey off the back auction.
