CYCLONES COMPLETE SWEEP OF SPIKES 7-4

University Park, PA – July 16 -The Brooklyn Cyclones and State College Spikes had a game dominated by the offense as a total of 11 runs were scored with 19 hits surrendered. Hansel Robles pitched 5.2 innings giving up five hits, four runs (only one earned) and walked three batters. The Cyclones would prevail though as they swept the Spikes, winning game three 7-4.

The Cyclones were first to strike as they scored one run in the second inning. After two quick outs, Stefan Sabol and Jayce Boyd both singled to the right fielder to put runners on first and second. Dimas Ponce would hit the third straight single to right field scoring Sabol and giving the Cyclones the early lead.

State College would put up a run in the bottom of the third after Robles was able to sit the first two batters down for a quick two outs. Tyler Gaffney would double to left field, followed up by a single by Dave Valesente to tie the game up at 1-1.

In the fourth inning the Cyclones would score another run thanks to a two out rally. After Boyd singled and Ponce walked, Eudy Pina doubled to center field scoring Boyd, taking back the lead 2-1.

Poor defense in the bottom of the fourth cost the Cyclones three unearned runs and putting them in a deficit of two runs. Jacob Stallings walked with one out and Chris Diaz grounded to Richie Rodriguez that appeared as though it could be an inning ending double play, but Rodriguez botched the play allowing Stallings to reach third. Yhonathan Barrios came up with runners on the corners and one out and grounded into a force out, allowing Stallings to score and Barrios to reach first after Diaz was out at second. The next batter was Jared Lakind and he walked to put runners on first and second with two outs. With Alex Fuselier batting, Robles threw a wild pitch moving each runner up one base. The wild pitch would cost Robles, as Fuselier would single to right field scoring both runners and giving the Spikes a 4-2 lead.

The Cyclones offense didn’t wait until two outs to start their rally in the fifth inning as the hot hitting Brandon Nimmo would lead the inning off with a single. A passed ball would allow Nimmo to move up to second base with Phillip Evans batting and no out. Evans would single to center field moving Nimmo to third base. After Alex Sanchez would strike out for the first out, Kevin Plawecki walked to load the bases and one out. Stefan Sabol would then ground into a force out at second base, allowing Nimmo to score, moving Evans to third and putting Sabol at first with two outs. The second passed ball of the inning by catcher Dave Valesente allowed Evans to score and moved Sabol to second. Boyd would work a walk to put runners on first and second with two out, bringing up Dimas Ponce. For the second time of the night, Ponce came through in the clutch singling to left field, scoring Sabol and moving Boyd to third base. Pina would then hit another RBI single to give the Cyclones a 6-4 lead that they wouldn’t give up.

Robles battled through this game giving the Cyclones nearly six innings of one earned run baseball. The Cyclones bullpen came in and quieted the bats of the Spikes, pitching 3.1 innings, surrendering only one hit and one walk, while giving up zero runs and striking out four batters. The Cyclones would add an insurance run in the ninth to win the game by a score of 7-4.
