MATEO LEADS CYCLONES TO 6-3 WIN OVER SPIKES

Brooklyn, NY – July 14th – The Cyclones took the first game of a three-game series against State College on Saturday night, topping the Spikes 6-3.

Starting pitchers Luis Mateo and Clay Holmes battled it out on the mound, neither allowing a run throughout the first five frames. Holmes went 5.0 scoreless innings for the Spikes, holding the Cyclones to just one hit. He walked two and struck out one. Mateo cruised through 7.0 scoreless innings to earn his fourth win of the season. He allowed one hit, one walk, and fanned eight batters.

Holmes was replaced by Emmanuel De Leon in the sixth. Eudy Pina led off the inning with a line drive single to left and advanced to third when Jeff Reynolds singled on a ground ball. Up next, Dimas Ponce hit a double to left to plate Pina and move Reynolds to third.

However, that would be the only run the Cyclones would manage that inning. De Leon got Phillip Evans to ground out to shortstop Jodaneli Carvajal before Alex Sanchez popped out to second baseman Yhonathan Barrios for the second out of the inning. Jayce Boyd then drew a walk, but Stefan Sabol followed, grounding into a force out at second.

In the top of the seventh, Brandon Nimmo drew a walk before Jeff Glenn flew out to left. Pina then reached on a force attempt when Barrios made a throwing error. Nimmo advanced to second on the play, and to third on a line drive single to center by Reynolds.

Josh Smith then came in out of the State College bullpen. A sacrifice fly to center field by Ponce allowed Nimmo to cross the plate for the second Brooklyn run of the night. A single to left hit off the bat of Evans, scored Pina to make it 3-0. With Reynolds at third, Sanchez reached on a fielding error by third baseman D.J. Crumlich. Reynolds came home to give the Cyclones had a four-run lead.

Brooklyn added a couple more runs in the eighth. Nimmo hit an RBI triple to score Sabol – who had led off the inning with a walk. Glenn then plated Nimmo with a line drive single hit to center field.

Reynolds and Nimmo both had a multi-hit game. Reynolds was 2-for-5 with a run scored, while Nimmo went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored, and an RBI.

The Spikes began a rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs - the first two off Cyclones reliever David Wynn. Barrett Barnes led things off with a walk, and advanced to third on a double by Crumlich. Barrett then came home on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Stallings. Walker Gourley singled to plate Crumlich, and moved to second when Rodarrick Jones walked.

Tyler Vanderheiden came in from the bullpen with the Cyclones leading 6-2. He allowed a single to Barrios to load the bases, and then walked Carvajal to give the Spikes another run. Vanderheiden then struck out Ryan Hornback to get out of trouble and end the game, picking up his fifth save of the season.
