BROOKLYN BATS JAMMED IN 6-3 LOSS TO JAMESTOWN

Brooklyn, NY – July 7th –  Cyclones starting pitcher Luis Mateo (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season on Saturday, having allowed four earned runs to the Jamestown Jammers in a 6-3 defeat. Mateo threw 6.0 innings, walked none, and struck out eight.

Frankie Reed earned the win for Jamestown, throwing 3.0 scoreless innings of relief. Matt Milroy, who started the game, lasted only 4.0 innings and gave up two runs (one earned) off four hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

The Jammers hit Mateo for three runs in the top of the first inning. Yefri Perez began the game with a single, but was caught stealing with Pedro Mendoza at bat. Back-to-back hits by Mendoza and Viosergy Rosa put runners on the corners for the Jammers. Matt Juengel was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Anthony Gomes hit a two-out, two-run line drive single to right field. Juengel moved to third on the play and was then plated on a single by Jesus Solorzano.

In the bottom half of the frame, Dimas Ponce reached first on a fielding error by Jamestown third baseman Juengel. He advanced to second when Alex Sanchez singled to center and then moved to third on a groundout by Cole Frenzel. Kevin Plawecki walked to load the bases before Stefan Sabol was hit by a pitch to bring in a run to make it 3-1.

Jamestown struck for another run in the third. Kentrell Dewitt hit a two-out single to center field before stealing second. Anthony Gomez then followed up that hit with a line drive single of his own, which allowed Dewitt to score. Gomez, however, was trying for an extra base hit and was thrown out at second.

In the following inning, Brooklyn picked up a run when Ponce singled on a ground ball to center field with two on and two out. Brandon Nimmo, who had walked to reach base, scored on the play.

The Cyclones then cut the Jammers’ advantage to just one run in the bottom of the eighth. Sabol hit a one-out double off of Jamestown reliever Nick Wittgren, before Jayce Boyd flied out to center field. Sabol then crossed the plate on a double by Nimmo. However, Nimmo – who represented the tying run – was stranded in scoring position as Eudy Pina flied out to end the inning.

But, the Jammers weren’t finished just yet, as they picked up a couple insurance runs in the top of the ninth off Brooklyn reliever Dawrin Frias. Juancito Martinez hit an RBI bloop single to right to score Gomez, who had reached on a single. With Perez batting, Martinez stole second. A throwing error by Plawecki, allowed Solorzano – who had previously doubled – to score.

Nick Wittgren picked up his fourth save of the season, having thrown the final two frames for the Jammers.

The Cyclones will take on the Jamestown Jammers at MCU Park again tomorrow, Sunday, July 8th at 5:00 PM. Tickets are available now by visiting the MCU box office, calling 718-507-TIXX, or CLICKING HERE.
