GEE, WHIZ!

Former Cyclone hurler Dillon Gee will make his major league debut on Tuesday, pitching for the Mets against Washington.

Gee was selected by the Mets in the 21st round of the 2007 June First Year Player Draft, out of The University of Texas at Arlington.  He made his professional debut with Brooklyn, and became a standout pitcher for the '07 Cyclones, going 3-1 with a 2.47 ERA in 14 starts.  His ERA ranked sixth in the New York-Penn League, and Gee allowed one run or less in seven of his 11 starts.  He also showcased impeccable control, striking out 56 batters and walking only nine in 62.0 innings.  Overall, he allowed 57 hits and 17 runs (all earned) in 14 starts, and had a 1.06 WHIP, second-best among Brooklyn starters.  Gee's efforts helped lead Brooklyn to a McNamara Division title in 2007, and Dillon tossed five shutout innings in his only postseason start, but did not receive a decision.

In 2008, Gee spent the majority of the season with the St. Luctie Mets (A) of the Florida State League, where he went 8-6 with a 3.25 ERA in 21 starts, was named to the FSL All-Star Team, and won the St. Lucie Sterling Award, emblematic of the team's most valuable player.  He was promoted to Binghamton (AA) of the Eastern League towards the end of the season, and went 2-0 with a 1.33 ERA in four starts for the B-Mets.

His 2009 season was limited, due to injury, but Dillon did make nine starts for Buffalo (AAA) of the International League, going 1-3 with a 4.10 ERA.

After an impressive Spring Training, Gee returned to Buffalo, and went 13-8 with a 4.96 ERA in 28 starts.  He set a new single-season record for Buffalo and led the International League with 165 strikeouts on the season.  He walked just 41 batters in 161.1 innings pitched, giving him a 9.2 K/BB ratio, second best in the league.

Gee becomes the 28th former Cyclone to make it to the major leagues, following Lucas Duda, who was Gee's teammate on the 2007 Brooklyn squad.  The addition of Gee gives the Mets seven former Cyclones on their active roster (Gee, Duda, Ike Davis, Nick Evans, Jenrry Mejia, Angel Pagan, and Bobby Parnell).  Two more members of the Mets' active roster -- Carlos Beltran and Oliver Perez -- have also worn a Cyclones uniform, reporting to Brooklyn on major-league rehab assignments.
