GOING, GOING...VAUGHN

On June 21st, Cory Vaughn hit the first professional home run of his career, just a few weeks removed from being drafted by the New York Mets in the fourth round, out of San Diego State University.  By year's end, Vaughn had become the most prolific slugger in Brooklyn Cyclones history.

Vaughn has baseball -- and home run power -- in his bloodlines, as his father, Greg, belted 355 home runs over 15 major-league seasons, and is one of only 25 players ever to hit 50 home runs in a single season.

Little did anyone know at the time, though, that Cory's first home run for the Cyclones would begin an assault on some of the franchise's longest-standing records.

Vaughn hit his 14th home run of the year in the last game of the regular season to set a new franchise record, one ahead of Frank Corr's 2001 total. Vaughn's 56 RBI this season also surpasses the previous high of 46, held by some of the most exciting and productive hitters ever to wear a Cyclones uniform -- Corr (2001), Ambiorix Concepcion (2004), and Jason Jacobs (2007).  In a coincidental twist, Cory's father, Greg, also hit a milestone home run on the last day of the 1998 season -- his 50th.

It is worth noting that Vaughn's spectacular season is not based solely on the long ball.  He is also batting .303 (81-for-264), with 45 runs, 14 doubles, five triples, and 12 stolen bases.

The home run has become his calling card, though, and has become a dynamic part of the Cyclones' offense.  In fact, Vaughn's 14th home run was the 64th of the season for the Cyclones, which also eclipses the team record of 58, set in 2001.

In the 13 games in which Vaughn has hit a home run this season, Brooklyn has won 11.

Here's a look at Cory Vaughn's record-setting 2010 home runs:
