The Cyclones (38-19) cut down Williamsport (33-24) in a 14-inning marathon game on Sunday night. Brooklyn heads into the NYPL All-Star break with the best record in the league and nine-game lead over Hudson Valley in the McNamara Division.
The Cyclones are now 4-1 in extra-inning games this year and 23-8 when they score first.
Spot-Starter Nelson Pereira took the mound for his first start of the season, and was nothing short of brilliant. Pereira (pictured, by George Napolitano) tossed five no-hit innings, before being removed due to a pitch count. He struck out six Crosscutters in his five innings of work. RHP Daniel Carela relieved Pereira and threw two scoreless innings, allowing only one hit. Southpaw Adam Kolarek surrendered the only run to Williamsport, pitching two innings and allowing the tying run in the eighth inning. The Cyclones then recieved three innings of scoreless baseball from RHP Johan Figuereo, who allowed only one baserunner. Samuel Taveras earned his second win of the season, surrendering only one hit in the 13th and 14th innings.
2B J.B. Brown led the Cyclones with four hits, and scored the game-winning run in the 14th inning against Williamsport. After reaching on a single, Brown stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. 1B Jeff Flagg drove in Brown with the winning run with a deep sacrifice fly to right field. LF Will Cherry registered a critical triple to lead off the fifth inning and scored Brooklyn's first run when he was plated by a hard single to center by CF Darrell Ceciliani. 3B Brian Harrison also had three hits, including his 10th double and second stolen base.
The Cyclones return home on August 18th to take on the Staten Island Yankees. That night, the first 2,500 fans will receive a Cyclones Umbrella presented by Geico. Wednesday will be Civil Servant Appreciation Night for the NYPD presented by MCU.
