On August 23, the Cyclones will host the New York Bocce Ball Charity Tournament for the Kids, sponsored by Hunter Green Associates LTD, and held in conjunction with Italian Heritage Night at KeySpan Park.
Bocce ball, like baseball, is an integral part of Brooklyn's cultural history, and is experiencing a resurgance in popularity in recent years. Union Hall, in Park Slope, for example, has brought bocce to a new, younger audience, thanks to two indoor bocce courts at the center of its sprawling bar and library.
On August 23, there will be four-to-six bocce courts set up at the ballpark, with matches being played throughout the afternoon. The finals are scheduled to be played on the KeySpan Park outfield prior to the 6pm game between the Cyclones and the Oneonta Tigers, after the gates have opened. Official start times and prizes to be announced.
There is a $25 entry fee to participate in the tournament, which includes a ticket to that night's Cyclones game. Proceeds from the tournament will be donated to Bellevue Hospital, and earmarked for the pediatric unit.
