The Cyclones were first on the board, scoring a run in the bottom of the first. Richie Rodriguez and Maikis De La Cruz hit back-to-back singles before Brandon Nimmo grounded into a force out. Rodriguez came home on the play to make it 1-0.
The Renegades tied the game in the fourth. After throwing three perfect innings, Brooklyn starting pitcher Luis Mateo hit Joey Rickard with a pitch. Mateo got Coyle to ground out, and Rickard advanced to second. Richie Shaffer then struck out swinging. With Ryan Dunn batting, a passed ball by Nelfi Zapata allowed Rickard to move to third. Mateo then walked Dunn and surrendered a run-scoring single to Justin O’Conner.
Hudson Valley starter Eduar Quinonez lasted 6.0 innings allowing one earned run off five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Mateo gave the Cyclones 7.0 strong innings. He surrendered one earned run off four hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. Mateo struck out the side in the sixth.
Paul Sewald came in to pitch the eighth. He gave up a double, followed by a single to put the go-ahead run on third base, but escaped trouble as he got Shaffer to ground into an inning-ending double play. Sewald suffered the loss after throwing a total of 2.0 innings and allowing two earned runs off four hits with three strikeouts.
Ryan Garton earned his fourth win after tossing the final 1.1 innings of relief. He gave up one earned run off five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
In the top of the ninth, Leonardo Reginatto crushed a two-run home run over the left field wall to give the Renegades a 3-1 lead. Ryan Dunn had led off the inning with a single.
The Cyclones will take on the Staten Island Yankees tomorrow night at MCU Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
