BARK IN THE PARK -- AUGUST 22nd

Wednesday, August 22 is Bark in the Park Night. Fans are asked to bring a can of dog and cat food to be donated to the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals – a coalition of more than 150 animal rescue groups and shelters working with Animal Care & Control of NYC (AC&C) to end the killing of healthy and treatable cats and dogs at AC&C shelters.

At eight weeks, little Boomer – Kevin Ponte’s Havanese puppy – is not much bigger than a catcher’s mitt; but like his owner, the Cyclone’s Head Turf Manager, Boomer is very familiar with the field at MCU Park.

“My wife and I picked him up the day before Memorial Day, and I first brought him to the ballpark the following Tuesday,” said Ponte. “He likes being out in the sun, chilling out and running in the open field. He loves it here.”

The restless puppy scampers across the baseline, ears flapping in the wind as Ponte calls his name. Boomer stops and rolls over on his back as his owner bends down to scratch his belly.

Asked if he plans on teaching Boomer any tricks, Ponte replied, “Right now, getting him to pee outside would be the best trick ever.”

Boomer was named after actor Matt Boomer, who plays Neal Caffrey on the television series “White Collar.” Ponte and his wife, Jamie are big fans of the show. Ponte said he was actually able to meet Tim DeKay, another “White Collar” star when DeKay just recently visited MCU Park.

“They were talking about filming an episode of ‘White Collar’ here,” said Ponte. “I met DeKay and he came back about a week later and gave me an autograph picture of him and Matt Boomer. That’s when we [he and wife, Jamie] decided to name our dog after him.”

This year, the Brooklyn Cyclones invite fans to join Ponte and Boomer in bringing their dogs to the 5th annual Bark in the Park night at MCU Park on Wednesday, August 22, 2012. Fans and their canine friends can share an exciting evening of fun as the Cyclones take on the Tri City Valley Cats at 7 p.m.

The stadium's bleacher section — renamed "The BOW-WOW Zone" for the night — will be reserved for those who bring their pooches to the game. Pre-game ceremonies will include a puppy parade – in which owners can walk their furry friends around the bases – and a best dressed dog contest.

Inside the ballpark, dogs and their owners will be given “doggie bags” to take home full of treats and other goodies from TD Bank.

The Mayor’s Alliance for NYC Animals with Maddie’s Fund and the North Shore Animal League will host an “Adopt a Mutt” event outside MCU Park. The organization, founded in 2002, is a coalition of more than 150 animal rescue groups and shelters working with Animal Care & Control of NYC (AC&C) to end the killing of healthy and treatable cats and dogs at AC&C shelters.

As in the past, this year, members of the Cyclones staff will also go into doggie parks throughout NYC and give away free tickets to dog owners courtesy of TD Bank.

Hundreds of owners and their dogs attend Bark in the Park night each year. Even some canine celebrities from WNYC’s reality series, “Doggie Moms” have been spotted in the packed bleachers.

The tradition began at MCU Park back in 2008, when a former Cyclone employee brought her pooch, Maverick, to the ballpark. The team adopted Maverick that summer and even honored him with his own bobble head.

With this year’s Bark in the Park night, the Cyclones hope to once again connect pet lovers and baseball fans for an exciting evening of family fun. To purchase seats for our Bark in the Park, visit the MCU Park box office or call Nicole Kneessy at 718-382-2604.
