July 9th—Norwich, CT—After a one-day hiatus, the Brooklyn Cyclones (12-10) began a three-game road series by defeating the Connecticut Tigers (8-12) 3-2 on Saturday night at Dodd Stadium to squash a three-game losing streak.
The Tigers jumped on the board first with a two-run homerun by Jeff Holm on a line drive to right off of Brooklyn starter Carlos Vazquez in the bottom of the second inning after Dean Green began the inning with a single to left. Vazquez finished with two runs on five hits with three strikeouts in six innings of work.
Brooklyn was held scoreless before finally breaking through in the top of the fifth inning. Consecutive singles by Ismael Tijerina and Chase Greene set the stage for Danny Muno as the shortstop smoked a two-run double to center to even the score at 2-2 and chase Tigers’ starter Tyler Barrett who pitched 4.1 innings. Muno is 4-for-9 since returning from the Disabled List on July 7th.
Deadlocked at 2-2, Travis Taijeron contributed the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning with a single to center off of reliever Fernando Celis (0-2) after Richard Lucas doubled on a groundball to left to start the inning.
Cyclones’ reliever Cory Mazzoni (1-0) earned his first professional win by contributing an inning of scoreless relief in the bottom of the seventh and Jeremy Gould retired the side in order to earn his fourth save.
