June 23rd – Wappingers Falls, NY - For the second straight start Carlos Vazquez (0-2) was masterful through 4.0 innings, but once again it was the fifth inning that proved to be his downfall as the Hudson Valley Renegades rallied for three runs, which proved to be all the offense they needed as the Cyclones fell by the score of 4-1 at Dutchess Stadium.
Vazquez, who struck out five of the first six batters he faced, cruised through four frames but ran into trouble with two outs in the fifth. The big blow came by way of a throwing error from Cyclones third baseman Richard Lucas, which allowed a pair of runs to score, and gave Hudson Valley a 3-0 edge.
The Cyclones responded in their next turn at-bat, getting on the scoreboard with a two-out rally. Outfielder Javier Rodriguez belted a double and then came around to score on an RBI single from J.B. Brown to cut the deficit to 3-1, but that is all the offense that Brooklyn would be able to muster. The Renegades tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning to push their lead to 4-1, which is how the game would end.
Hudson Valley hurlers Wilking Rodriguez (1-1) and Drew Leary kept the Brooklyn batters off balance all night combining to allow only five hits and two walks while striking out eight.
The Cyclones will look to bounce back on Friday in the middle game of a three-game set. Jeff Walters (0-0) will make his second start of the season for Brooklyn. The ‘Clones return home to MCU Park on Saturday for the series finale, and the start of fireworks week at the ballpark. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the MCU Park box office, by calling 718-507-TIXX or at BrooklynCyclones.com.
