CYCLONES OPEN MCU PARK WITH A WIN

Brooklyn won its second straight game to start the season on Saturday, downing the Staten Island Yankees by a score of 9-6 in front of a record crowd at MCU Park.  9,888 fans filled the ballpark, for the largest Opening Day crowd in franchise history.

Lefthander Chris Hilliard (1-0) made the start in the team’s home opener, and tossed six strong innings to earn his first win of the season. He allowed just two runs on three hits while striking out five and walking two.

Following Hilliard, Hunter Carnevale made his professional debut and pitched a scoreless seventh inning but surrendered four runs (three earned) without getting an out in the eighth. Nelson Pereira relieved Carnevale in the eighth and escaped the jam, and Johan Figuereo threw a perfect ninth to earn his first save.

The Cyclones’ offense tallied nine runs on nine hits, and registered nine RBI, while also taking advantage of five Staten Island errors. CF Darrell Ceciliani, 3B Jet Butler and DH Joe Bonfe were among the top offensive performers, contributing two RBI and two hits each.  1B Jeff Flagg also found himself in the middle of the offensive explosion, going 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a stolen base, bringing his average up to .429. SS Rylan Sandoval and C Taylor Freeman also contributed one RBI a piece.

The Cyclones are on the road again on Sunday, to play the last game of the three-game series with the Yankees at Staten Island before returning to MCU Park on Monday when they face off against the Aberdeen Iron Birds, with first pitch scheduled for 7pm.

That night, the first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a 10th Season Plaque, presented by SUNY Downstate Medical Center. It will also be “Furthur Night,” with the team wearing special jerseys to be auctioned off throughout the game.

There's something for everyone at every Cyclones game -- free t-shirts, free jerseys, bobbleheads, fireworks, free food, and more!  Check out the entire promotional schedule and get your tickets now!
