CYCLONES FALL IN EXTRAS

The Brooklyn Cyclones (41-24) rallied back to overcome an early deficit, but lost to the Vermont Lake Monsters (30-34) in extra innings on Wednesday night.

Starting pitcher Wes Wrenn lasted just 2.1 innings for Brooklyn, giving up five runs on seven hits. Recently reaquired lefthander Lance Hoge came in to weather the storm and escaped from multiple jams as he surrendered six hits but only one run in 4.2 innings of work.

Trailing 5-1 in the fourth inning, DH Alex Gregory (pictured, by George Napolitano) crushed a solo home run off the top of the left-centerfield scoreboard to bring the Cyclones within thre of the Lake Monsters.  After surrendering another run in the top half of the fifth, the Cyclones continued the comeback in the bottom half of the frame when SS Robbie Shields led off the inning with a single, and 2B Jordany Valdespin and 3B  Richard Lucas followed with back-to-back doubles to bring the score to 6-4.

In the Cyclones' half of the seventh inning, Lucas again doubled to drive in Shields, and in the eighth inning, C Dock Doyle laced a two-out double to score Gregory and tie the game at 6-6.

RHP Bobby Gagg kept Vermont scoreless for two innings, and allowed just one hit, but in the top of the 10th inning, the Lake Monsters scored a run off of Brandon Sage, and Brooklyn could not come back again in the team's final at bat.

The first-place Cyclones have a 3.5 game lead over Staten Island in the McNamara Division, and now travel to Oneonta for a three-game set with the Tigers, and then to Lowell for a three-game series with the Spinners.

The Cyclones return home to KeySpan park on Wednesday, September 2nd to take on the division-rival Hudson Valley Renegades.  That night is Wild Wednesday at the ballpark, packed with fireworks, free hot dogs, a Team Phot giveaway, and an appearance by Reggy, the purple party dude.  Read all about it!
