BKLYN Takes Two from the Tigers

NORWICH, CT (August 23, 2019) –  The pitching posted 14 innings of shutout baseball, and Mets rehabber Jeff McNeil led the bats to a nine-run night as the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Short-Season Class A affiliate of the New York Mets, swept the Connecticut Tigers in a doubleheader on Friday night at Dodd Stadium.

BIG MOMENTS

  • Wilmer Reyes put Brooklyn on the board immediately with a solo home run to left field in the top of the first inning.
  • Brooklyn added to the lead with three runs in the third without collecting a hit. The Cyclones scored on a bases-loaded walk, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly off Connecticut reliever Cristhian Tortosa.
  • Michel Otanez, Mitch Ragan, and Josh Hejka limited Connecticut to just three hits in the first of the Cyclones’ two shutouts.
  • Mets rehabber Jeff McNeil went 1-4 with a first-inning infield single and a run scored in the third inning. He started four innings in right field and played the final three frames at third base.

BIG MOMENTS

  • After six innings of gridlock, the Cyclones broke through for five runs in the seventh inning by playing small ball. Ranfy Adon, Kennie Taylor, and Wilmer Reyes each drove in a run on singles that didn’t leave the infield grass. Ariel Yera collected an RBI groundout, and Jake Mangum lashed an RBI single to center field in the only run-scoring at-bat that produced a ball hit to the outfield.
  • Dan Goggin, Hunter Parsons, and Jared Biddy combined for Brooklyn’s second shutout of the night. They struck out 14 of the 21 Tigers retired in the game.
  • Connecticut starter Jack O’Loughlin was brilliant but took a no-decision after posting six shutout innings with six strikeouts.

  • With the Cyclones’ win in Game 1 of the doubleheader, manager Edgardo Alfonzo became the fourth Brooklyn skipper in franchise history to win 100 career games, joining his older brother Edgar Alfonzo, Rich Donnelly, and Tom Gamboa.
  • At 37-28, Brooklyn has matched its high-water mark of nine games above .500.
  • The Cyclones are now tied with Aberdeen for first place in the Wild Card, and they trail Hudson Valley by just one game in the McNamara Division.
  • Brooklyn collected its second doubleheader sweep in less than a week. The Cyclones swept two games from Tri-City on Sunday at MCU Park.
  • In Game 2, the Cyclones struck out 14 batters, one shy of the team’s season high. Hunter Parson struck out a career-high six batters.
