BKLYN Shutout for 11th Straight L

Brooklyn, NY – August 22, 2017 Two teams headed in different directions squared off on Tuesday night at MCU Park with the Hudson Valley Renegades defeating the Brooklyn Cyclones by the score of 3-0. For the Renegades it was their 11th straight win, and for Brooklyn their 11th straight loss.

LHP Jake Simon (1-4) made the start for Brooklyn and was the hard luck loser. The southpaw allowed a pair of unearned runs on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts for the Cyclones. In the first inning, with a runner on third and one out, Simon struck out 1st round pick Brendan McKay for out number two, but strike three eluded catcher Carlos Sanchez for a passed ball, allowing Vidal Brujan to score the game’s first run.

In the bottom of the frame, the Cyclones had their best scoring chance of the game when Dylan Snypes walked and Walter Rasquin singled to put a pair of runners aboard with nobody out. But after Snypes advanced to third on a fly out from Quinn Brodey to put runners on the corners. Jose Medina and Jeremy Vasquez each struck out to end the threat.

In the third inning, the Hudson Valley lead would swell to 2-0 with Brujan at the heart of the threat again. The second baseman started the inning with a double and advanced to third when Quinn Brodey misplayed the ball in the gap. Brujan would then come chugging home on another error, this time a throwing error from SS Dylan Snypes, to extend Hudson Valley’s lead.

MLB All-Star Jeurys Familia, making a rehab appearance for the Cyclones, tossed a 1-2-3 inning in the fifth and needed just 11 pitches to do so while topping out at 95 MPH. Familia became the second major league All-Star to pitch for Brooklyn in the last 10 days, joining RHP Matt Harvey who made two starts for the Cyclones earlier in the month.

Brooklyn relievers Marcel Renteria and Conner O’Neil added 3.0 scoreless innings of relief, but the Cyclones offense was never able to advance a runner past second base after the first inning.

The Renegades tacked on an insurance run in the ninth, scoring a single run off of O’Neil in his second inning on the mound, to make the final score 3-0.

For the Cyclones, the loss dropped them to 15-44 – establishing a new franchise record for losses in a season. It also extended their franchise worst losing streak to 11-games. Since at least 2005, there has only been one losing streak longer than 11 games which came courtesy of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers who lost 13 straight from July 3 – July 14, 2013.

Brooklyn will look to avoid making NYPL history when they take on the Hudson Valley Renegades in the middle game of a three-game set with Chris Viall (0-1) on the mound. It’s a WayBack Wednesday so all tickets will be just $10 as the Cyclones Celebrate 90s Night featuring Doug presented by Nickelodeon.
