Cyclones Skid Continues, Fall 4-2

Brooklyn, NY – August 6, 2017 – The Cyclones struggles continued on Sunday afternoon as they fell to the Lowell Spinners by the score of 4-2. For the Cyclones it was their fourth straight loss and the 17th time in 46 games that the team has scored two runs or less.

Lowell wasted no time getting on the scoreboard on Sunday afternoon as Yomar Valentin led off the game with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and came home on an RBI single off the bat of Frankie Rios and just like that – just 14 pitches into the game – Lowell had a 1-0 advantage.

But Brooklyn responded in their half of the frame to draw even at 1-1. Walter Rasquin singled, advanced to second on a ground out from Leon Byrd and came home on a booming double off the bat Jeremy Vasquez that tied things up.

But Lowell continued to have success against Brooklyn starter Luis De Los Santos (0-3) as they plated a run in the second and a pair in the third to chase the righthander from the game and push the Lowell lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the third, Brooklyn sliced into the deficit with Rasquin and Byrd at the center of the rally yet again. Walter Rasquin started the threat with a one-out double, advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw and came home when Leon Byrd legged out an infield single that made it 4-2.

Four Cyclones relievers combined on 6.1 scoreless frames , scattering just three hits and two talks while striking out seven. Cannon Chadwick continued his stellar season with another 2.0 shutout frames and lowered his ERA to a miniscule 0.51. Over 17.2 innings the 9th round pick from Arkanasas has allowed just one run.

The steller performance by the Brooklyn bullpen gave the Cyclones a chance to come back, but the team squandered a golden opportunity in the seventh to diffuse any thoughts of a come-from-behind win. Reed Gamache singled to start the threat, and a pair of one-out hits from Franklin Correa and Jeremy Wolf loaded the bases for Brooklyn. But Carlos Sanchez struck out looking and Rasquin struck out swinging to end the frame, with Brooklyn still trailing 4-2.

Denyi Reyes (5-0) got the win for Lowell after tossing 6.0 shutout innings of relief, allowing five hits while striking out nine.

The Cyclones, who have now lost 11 straight games to the Spinners, will look to salvage the series finale on Monday evening when they send Jose Geraldo to the mound for his Brooklyn debut. Game time is 7:00 PM.
