JABS KNOCKOUT PUNCH GIVES BROOKLYN 2-1 WIN

BROOKLYN, NY – June 19, 2016 – After a pair of heartbreaking losses to start the season, the Cyclones picked up their first win of 2016 on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Tri-City ValleyCats 2-1 at MCU Park. In his professional debut, Jay Jabs plated a pair of runs with an RBI single to provide all the offense Brooklyn would need.

A night after being no-hit, the Cyclones tallied their first base-hit of the game in the bottom of the second inning when Enmanuel Zabala stroked a single through the hole into left field, but Brooklyn’s scoreless drought continued when the Brooklyn leftfielder was stranded at first.

Cyclones starter Merandy Gonzalez sparkled in his 2016 debut tossing 5.1 scoreless frames, striking out seven and allowing just three hits. After cruising through the first five innings, the righthander found himself in a bit of trouble in the top of the sixth. Stephen Wrenn walked to lead off the inning and moved into scoring position with nobody out thanks to a swipe of second. Gonzalez was able to strike out Daz Cameron for the first out of the inning before handing the ball off to Alejandro Castro. The sidewinding righthander induced a pair of groundouts to keep the score knotted at 0-0.

But in the top of the seventh the ‘Cats scratched out a run to take the lead. Carmen Benedetti and Alex De Goti started the frame with back-to-back singles before a sacrifice bunt from Randy Cesar but a pair of runners in scoring position with just one out. Chuckie Robinson took advantage of the scoring chance with a line drive single to left that plated Benedetti with the game’s first run. Alejandro Castro was able to stop the bleeding there though, getting Marcos Almonte to ground back to the pitcher and Wrenn to strike out looking to end the threat.

In the bottom of the frame, the Brooklyn bats finally awoke thanks to some new blood in the lineup. Jacob Zanon, making his professional debut, singled to start the frame and advance to third when Zabala singled to left, putting runners on the corners with nobody out. Zabala then stole second and would come around to score, along with Zanon, on a two-RBI single off the bat of Jay Jabs – his first professional hit.

LHP Taylor Henry came on to pitch a scoreless eighth and ninth to close out the win and pick up his first save of the season.

Brooklyn will look to make it two in a row on Monday night when they take on the ValleyCats in the middle game of a three-game set. LHP Joel Huertas will make the start for Brooklyn. It will be Michael Conforto Bobblehead night, with the first 2,000 fans going home with the collectible courtesy of MCU. Tickets are still available by calling 718-507-TIXX, logging on to BrooklynCyclones.com or in person at the MCU Park Box Office.  The game will also be available on SNY - the television home of the New York Mets.
