'BIRDS BEAT BKLYN, 5-2

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – August 28, 2015 - Despite breaking out of a 22-inning scoreless drought, the Cyclones fell to the Aberdeen IronBirds for the second night in a row at MCU Park by a score of 5-2. Right-hander Eddie Villasmil took the loss for Brooklyn after 6.0 innings of work, during which he allowed six hits, three runs, all earned, and striking out six. Brooklyn mounted just four hits for the second straight night and have now dropped three games in a row.

The IronBirds drew first blood in the third when right fielder Mike Odenwaelder led off with a solo home run, giving Aberdeen an early 1-0 lead. Villasmil held the IronBirds off for the remainder of the inning, retiring the next three batters he faced.

The Brooklyn bats made a comeback in the fourth. It started with a leadoff walk for Vinny Siena, followed by a single from David Thompson that put runners at the corners. A sacrifice fly from Jeff Diehl scored Siena and snapped the Cyclones’ 22-inning scoreless streak, tying the score at 1-1.

The teams matched each other with one-run frames during the fifth. Aberdeen’s Drew Turbin led off the inning with a single and stole second to put himself in scoring position. A fly out pushed Turbin to third and he later scored on a balk by Villasmil. The ‘Clones began their counter with a single from Hengelbert Rojas. The left fielder reached second on a ground out by Branden Kaupe and was brought home on a single from Alfredo Reyes.

The IronBirds gained the edge on Brooklyn in the sixth. The threat started when a single and a double put runners on second and third with nobody out. Aberdeen scored on a sacrifice fly before two ground outs ended the inning with the Cyclones trailing 3-2.

New-to-Brooklyn Raul Jacobson made his Cyclones debut in the seventh and despite the threat of runners at the corners, the righty held off the IronBirds allowing just two hits. P.J. Conlon then came in from the bullpen to throw a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the eighth.

Aberdeen secured their lead in the ninth. With southpaw Carlos Valdez on the mound for Brooklyn, Turbin hit a double and advanced to third on a ground out. A single followed by a triple notched two more on the board for the IronBirds with two outs. Valdez went on to strike out the next Aberdeen batter before Brooklyn was held scoreless in the ninth, ending the game 5-2.

The Cyclones look to avoid a sweep at home Saturday night for the final game of the three-game series with the IronBirds. Right-hander Tyler Badamo (3-6) will take the mound for Brooklyn during Military Appreciation Night at MCU Park. Come out to the ballpark to support our men and women in uniform and stick around to enjoy a post game fireworks show.
