CYCLONES HONORED WITH 2014 FREITAS AWARD

San Diego, CA – December 8, 2014 – The Brooklyn Cyclones have been recognized for the franchise's outstanding 2014 season and longtime contribution to the baseball industry and local community by being named the winner of Baseball America's prestigious Bob Freitas Award for the Class-A Short-Season/Rookie level.

Cyclones Vice President Steve Cohen accepted the award as part of Minor League Baseball's annual awards luncheon this afternoon at the Baseball Winter Meetings at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel.

The Freitas Awards, named after longtime minor league baseball ambassador Bob Freitas, have been handed out by Baseball America annually since 1989 and recognize franchises that have demonstrated "sustained excellence in the business of minor league baseball." One franchise from each of MiLB's four classification levels (AAA, AA, A, Short-A/Rookie) is honored each year.

"Being recognized with this award is a great way to culminate a great year at MCU Park," said Steve Cohen, Brooklyn Cyclones Vice President. "This recognition is a testament to the outstanding work, creativity and passion of our front office staff, but also speaks to the special relationship that the borough of Brooklyn has had with the game of baseball over the years and why we will be welcoming our 4,000,000th fan through the gates of MCU Park this summer."

The 2014 season marked the 14th consecutive season, in which the Brooklyn Cyclones have led the New York-Penn League in attendance, drawing more than 231,000 fans through the gates this summer. The team also hosted the 10th Annual New York-Penn League All-Star Game in August, where they drew 7,230 fans – the second highest total in the history of the NYPL topped only by the last time Brooklyn hosted the game in 2005.

The team also garnered national attention for a unique and creative promotional schedule during the 2014 campaign including the “90s Are All That Night,” “Sports Illustrated’s Beach Party”, and “Salute to Seinfeld Night.” The Salute to Seinfeld Night also garnered the team a pair of Golden Bobbleheads at the 2014 Promotional Seminar for “Best Theme Night” and “Best Overall Promotion.”

"We are both humbled and thrilled to be recognized as a winner of the Baseball America Freitas Award and are excited to share this with our fans, business and community partners, and anyone who has enjoyed the experience of Cyclones baseball since the team’s inception in 2001," said Kevin Mahoney, General Manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones. "This is truly a special recognition, and one that is held in very high regard within Minor League Baseball."
