CYCLONES LOSE HEARTBREAKER IN 11, 6-5

Aberdeen, MD – July 5, 2013 -- The Cyclones were down late in the game but rallied to tie in the eighth inning but Aberdeen would come out on top in 11 innings, 6-5. Anthony Chavez hit the first home run for the Cyclones since June 19th, a span covering 15 games.

In the top of the second inning after James Roche struck out, Jared King drew a one out walk. Alex Sanchez then doubled to center moving King to third, bringing up Jorge Rivero. Rivero would lift a fly ball deep enough to center that would allow King to tag-up and give the Cyclones an early 1-0 lead.

The IronBirds would tie the game up though in the bottom of the third inning at 1-1. Anthony Vega beat out an infield single to start the inning off and moved to second base on a wild pitch by Dario Alvarez. Austin Wynn then grounded out to the shortstop for the first out, not allowing Vega to move to third. Jared Breen then grounded out to second for the second out, this time Vega was able to advance to third. With two outs and Kris Richards batting, Colton Plaia had a passed ball assessed to him, bringing in Vega to tie the game.

In the bottom of the fourth, the IronBirds would again take advantage of two wild pitches and a throwing error to take the lead. Connor Bierfeldt led the inning off by swinging at a wild pitch on strike three and beat Plaia’s throw down to first. Connor then moved to second with Manny Hernandez batting after Dario’s second wild pitch on the evening. During the same at-bat, Manny would strike out for the first out of the inning. Hector Veloz stepped up to the plate and beat out an infield single, moving Connor to third to put men on the corners with one out. Tanner Rust grounded to Anthony Chavez who committed an error allowing Connor to score, giving Aberdeen the 2-1 lead. Dario would be able to avoid further trouble in the inning. Aberdeen would add one run in the fifth and two in the sixth to extend the lead to 5-1.

The Cyclones put together a big comeback in the top of the eighth inning as they put up four runs to tie the game at 5-5. To start the top of the eighth the Cyclones strung four straight hits together, they had six total in the game coming into the eighth. Rivero led the inning off with an infield single and moved to second on a single by Plaia that went to right field. Anthony Chavez then came up and launched his first home run of the season, a three run shot over the left field fence to cut the deficit to 5-4. Patrick Biondi kept the line going, doubling to left field, bringing up Juan Gamboa who flew out deep to right, allowing Biondi to tag and move to third with one out. With the tying run just 90 feet from home, L.J. Mazzilli hit a fly ball to left that was deep enough to score the speedy Biondi

In the top of the eleventh inning, Mazzilli stepped up with one out and singled to center and promptly stole second base with James Roche batting. During that at-bat Roche would strike out for the second out of the inning. Jared King then came up and singled to left and Mazzilli attempted to score but was called at the plate for the third out of the inning on a disputed call by manager Rich Donnelly who argued that Mazzilli’s leg was under tag.

Aberdeen took that momentum with them into the bottom of the eleventh inning when Jared Breen led the inning off with a double down the right field line. Kris Richards then attempted to lay down a sac bunt to move Breen to third, but first baseman Alex Sanchez tried the aggressive play to get Breen at third, but the throw went down the left field line, scoring the winning run in Breen. Aberdeen defeats Brooklyn for the second straight night.

Brooklyn will return to MCU Park on Sunday, July 6th at 5:00 PM to start a three game series with the Lowell Spinners. For tickets call 718-507-TIXX, visit the ticket office or CLICK HERE.
