CYCLONES FALL 5-2 AFTER VALLEYCATS RALLY

Brooklyn, NY – August 21st – Nelfi Zapata put the Cyclones on the board in the third, blasting a two-run home run over the left field wall, but the ValleyCats rallied in the fifth and Tri-City went on to defeat Brooklyn 5-2.

Brooklyn starting pitcher Rainy Lara loaded the bases in the fifth with two walks and a hit batsman. He then got Austin Elkins to strike out before surrendering a two-run single by Preston Tucker, which tied the game and knocked him from the mound. Tim Peterson then came in from the bullpen and allowed a single to Jesse Wierzbicki to give Tri-City the lead. Up next, Tyler Heineman hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2.

Lara was tagged for four earned runs over 4.1 innings of work. He struck out three and walked two in just his second loss of the year.

The Cyclones were in trouble again in the top of the sixth. Reliever Craig Hanson walked Ryan Dineen and hit Dan Gulbransen with a pitch before Joe Sclafani reached on an error by shortstop Phillip Evans. That error allowed Dineen to cross the plate and give the ValleyCats a three-run advantage.

Tri-City starting pitcher Juri Perez earned his second win after throwing 6.0 innings. He allowed the two earned runs off six hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Jeremiah Meiners tossed the final 3.0 frames, earning his second save.

For the Cyclones, Matt Koch threw 3.0 scoreless innings of relief, giving up just two hits, walking none, and striking out three.

Brooklyn was just 1-for-2 with runners in scoring position – Juan Gamboa, who was plated by Zapata, had led off the third frame with a line drive double. The team left five men on base.

The Cyclones will take on the Tri-City ValleyCats again on Wednesday, August 22nd at 7:00 PM. Fans are encouraged to bring their dogs with them to the ballgame tomorrow as it is Bark in the Park Night at MCU Park.
