The Brooklyn Cyclones, Single A affiliate of the New York Mets, will be hosting a St. John's alumni event prior to tonight's 7 p.m. game against the Staten Island Yankees at MCU Park.
Hall of Fame coach Jack Kaiser and current Red Storm skipper Ed Blankmeyer will be in attendance and each will throw out a ceremonial first pitch. Current Cyclones pitching coach and St. John's All-American Frank Viola will also be on hand, while numerous other special guests are slated to be at the event.
Ticketholders in the St. John's alumni group will be seated on the party deck, located on the luxury suite level.
Interested St. John's alums can contact STJ group ticket leader Adriana Lewinsky at 718-390-4145, or via e-mail at email@example.com, to purchase tickets. Tickets will be available for pick-up at the will call window.
A part of the St. John's family for more than 60 years, Kaiser currently serves as the Athletic Director Emeritus. An American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League (ACBL) Hall of Famer, Kaiser played baseball, basketball and soccer at the University in the late 1940s, coached the baseball team from 1952-73 and then served as the Director of Athletics from 1973-95. Kaiser led St. John's to the College World Series as both a player and a coach and co-founded both the BIG EAST Conference and the ACBL.
A four-time BIG EAST and four-time ABCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year, Blankmeyer has posted a 549-327-3 record in 16 seasons at the helm of the Red Storm. The all-time winningest coach in BIG EAST play (256 victories), Blankmeyer has led the Red Storm to two BIG EAST Tournament crowns, three BIG EAST regular season titles, seven NCAA Regional appearances and 12 BIG EAST Tournament appearances. The skipper has had 73 All-BIG EAST selections and has seen 52 of his players drafted and/or signed to professional contracts.
Tonight's game is also Italian Heritage Night with the first 3,000 fans in attendance receiving a Brooklyn Pride T-Shirt. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. The Cyclones have 11 home games left in 2011 season.
